show review: Brian Glaze and the Night Shift, BRIDEZ @ SMiLE

June 4th, 2008 Comments Off

On the for real, what is going on? I saw BRIDEZ and Brian Glaze a few nights ago at SMiLE. I do not know what it is, but I really think that guy’s album cover should look like a guns and roses album cover or some other pop metal kinda thing. I thought it sounded like Bruce Springsteen though or some other kind of ‘melodic rock’ thing. I know, lame kinda but, still, I liked this! I noticed a lot of Birdman Records people in the audience, you know because of the connection(s) with The Cuts. At one point I said to my friend “I think everbody in the audience is on Birdman” and she leaned forward and asked some guy if he had a record on Birdman and he did! Also, Brian Glaze fell on me at this show. I don’t know how he managed it, but he went tumbling off of that four inch stage and right into me. WORLD FAMOUS CURSE?

Brian Glaze and The Night Shift

BRIDEZ were great as always and they didn’t spill anybodies drinks but their own!

I’ve been down south this past weekend, visiting my family in the land of deadeye (OK, actually no. I was further south where they have Dolly Parton and The Grand Ole Opry instead of Slint and Terrastock. And actually, they don’t even have Dolly where I was, but rather a lot of dead civil war soldiers so if you see that flag anywhere its historical, ok?).

Anyway, when I first started coming to Murfreesboro to visit the family I wasn’t super excited about it because I’m childish and it isn’t ‘home’ and that was totally inconvenient. You know, for me. But over the years I’ve been finding little things here and there to look forward to. This year I noticed that Foot Village was making a stop here and thats how I found out about a place called House House. There weren’t any shows there this weekend, but its nice to know there’s something local to check out when I’m in town.

Another of the things I look forward to is visiting Grimey’s New & Preloved Music. I usually find a few fun used records here, stuff that doesn’t pop up here too often, or at least, doesn’t make it past one of the innumerable record store employees it has to go past. The staff is friendly and really excited about music. I don’t think I’ve ever been in the store without trading a story or two about whatever I’m purchasing, be it The DBs or Anti Pop Consortium. The store also hosts quite a few in store performaces.

I’ve always griped that the stores here in SF could be a bit friendlier — to the customer mind you, not to the muscians. I’ve found the stores here to be incredibly supportive of the local music scene. But as a customer, I’m just going to say that I’ve had a more than a few absurd “we’re cooler than you” experiences. I bring this up becuase this last visit to Grimey’s was absurdly great. First of all, for whatever reason, they tipped me off on these two crates full of crazy good records that they’d just bought but hadn’t put out yet. Score for me (and it was all reasonably priced)! That was nice. BUT, while I was digging through these two crates of used records that bordered on too good to be true somebody in the store walked over and said “Its beer-thirty, do you want a beer?”. I’m not sure why this was a question: Yes!

They explained to me that they decided to start running the store like they would run their lives. If it was a Saturday afternoon and they weren’t at work they’d be having a beer so thats what they were going to do. So, bay area, take note. Saturday afternoons at Grimey’s are beer-thirty where they offer you a beer and invite you to browse through their records, recommend things, and tell you about fun shows they’ve been to. They don’t complain to the customers about how expensive rent is and how the record industry is tanking. Maybe thats unfair, because the bay is retard-o expensive and Nashville is el-cheapo, but them’s the breaks. All I know is I had more fun at beer-thirty!

Monday Night Smile: Brian Glaze & The Night Shift, Bridez,

I was so busy being down south I almost fo’got ta mentuhn that tonight is Monday Night SMiLE! You know we love SMiLE, Neil, and The Knockout. You also know we love Bridez; so tonight is going to be a good one:

Bridez

This Monday June 2, you should leave the house with your eyes shut and wander aimlessly like a somnambulist. Without fail, your feet will carry you to the Knockout where you can safely open your eyes and take in the spectacle of smiling faces and dancing bodies. What will be the cause of the merriment?

At around 9:30pm, Frond will take the stage. They are composed of Amy and Andrew who used to be in Tapestry together (also known as Shag Tapestry) with the addition of Jesse from Bramble & Briar. This is bound to be delightful!

An hour or so after this, the heavy and fun rock of Bridez will spin through your head. They filled a bill for me last month in a pinch, and I was so dazzled by them I invited them back right away. Liza’s best band to date, and a really hot one! (A hot date?)

Sometime before midnight, I will introduce the headlining act, namely Brian Glaze and the Night Shift. I’ll save my flowery rhetoric for that moment, and simply say that this is one of the most enjoyable, solid acts around.

So don’t miss this show. It’d just be dumb. The drinks are cheap, the bartenders are friendly, and I’ll be playing all manner of groovy tunes before, between, and after the bands.

Also: Pam (from Sugar & Gold) will be guest dj!

The Knockout is at 3223 Mission near 29th street.

xox,
Neil

Except for the fact that I’m super tired because I couldn’t get to sleep last night, I think tonight is finally the night I’m not going to bail early because I’m exhausted and stick around for Brian Glaze. I mean it! Promises!

The Passionistas aren’t the only ones going gay: Everyone’s gay! And apparently our hero Emile makes no exception to the torrid sodomites who will grace our fair city 28 June at Thee Parkside. This is a party to commemorate thee fabulous Devoncito’s 30th birthday and for whatever “pride” one can muster.

It will mark the return of the newly re-formed Mon Cousin Belge and will feature performances by Ice Cream Socialites and The Caldonias (with our grrrrrrl Nadia of Fierce Perm! yayyyyyy!!!!!) DJ’s Hot Lunch and Sex Wax will be cracking out some killer punk rawk and faggot jams all night for what promises to be an unforgettable evening of abomination and international horreur!!!
