pro prop 8 ads on myspace - so annoying
November 4th, 2008 by Jeremy SmearsI have been getting steadily more annoyed by these “yes on prop 8″ ads all over myspace. I’m not sure with who though. The “no on prop 8″ camp for not having their ads out there? Myspace for accepting the ads (should I think that myspace is anti gay? should we throw a big pink boycot?) The Mormons for paying for the ads? Ad targeting systems for not realizing I’m a bad market for that ad?
Uggh, when can we get to moving marriage out of government? I just want them to issue me and whomever I chose to do my business with a contact. Leave marriage to the churches and other places I don’t go, personally I don’t need these institutions to validate my life decisions.

October 17th, 2008 by Jeremy SmearsI was going to do a review of the Twin Crystals show in Oakland last week but it was such a surreal disaster I’m not even sure if it there’s a point.
What a horribly organized show! I showed up with Legs at ten o’clock to a class room with some confused looking people in it. No instruments, amps, or anything remotely resembling a show in sight. Legs blurts out “Is this a joke” and the people laughed and said maybe. We started talking to one of the confused guys who turned out to be
in Ghost Echoes and he said he didn’t really know what was going on but that he’d read in a blog somewhere that they were playing this show.
Awesome. So we went away for a bit and came back to find the same room packed with young kids devoutly watching some other kids playing some seriously precious Juno-core. Signs on the wall pointed to the members “Guitar 1″ & “Guitar 2″ and another pointing to the amp reading “Magic Box”. Before each song each of them introduce themselves with a different phrase. “I am the sparrow” and “I am the wind”. For a minute I thought maybe I had Alzheimer’s and didn’t realize I was actually at Cafe Grattitude. Some drunk young gay is tossing Tecates around. What? I keep hoping one of the beers will smack somebody in the head and cause some damage at this prosaic rock love in. Don’t these kids know there’s a war on?? “I am Iraq” and “I am a home made road side bomb”. Don’t these kids know there’s an economic crisis? “I am your college fund” and “I am your parents portfolio”.
We step outside because its getting old. But, magically, it kind of got so bad it got good. Most of the people there to see Twin Crystals/Sucks/Ghost Echoes are annoyed and I wish this band was doing this to make people angry. I like bands that are so bad on purpose its hilarious, like the Zip Code Rapists or like California Lightning this one time I saw them when they were really stoned and played a set consisting of them alternating Mustang Sally and Happy Birthday for thirty minutes. But this wasn’t that funny and it went on for a really really long time.
Legs gets severely irritated and asks me to take her home.
I get back at 12:30 (I missed Sucks) but was just in time for Twin Crystals who, if you haven’t listened to our imeem thing, sound a lot like The Units if that band had been made up of mentally unstable teenagers who went off of their meds. Anyway, they were so rad for the ten minutes they got to play before the cops showed up and shut the thing down. The cop was totally annoying too… he told the Tecate gay he was going to fine him because he could smell marijuana. Huh? I hope that kid wasn’t dumb enough to be intimidated by that.

Ghost Echoes I think might be one of the nicest bands out there because they hung out all night, lent equipment, and didn’t even get to play. The word on the internet and from Twin Crystals is that they are totally loud and totally awesome. They are playing this weekend at The Mansion with Ganglians who the Art for Spastics guy said on some mailing list are the best pop band in Sacramento (and that you should ignore their myspace recordings which sound like the shins or something, ugh!). You should totally go (we are!)

I don’t know why I didn’t post about Will from BRIDEZ first solo outing before the show. I guess thats just how we do it around here sometimes. Sorry Will!
Because I am kinda juvenile, I was disappointed to hear that there was no band called Butt Milk Shake but that, in fact, it was two bands Butt and Milk Shake. You can’t always get what you want I guess, being a child I’m still learning that.
Anyway, Will assembled a five piece band and turned out a set of fully arranged pop songs from what was supposedly just a bedroom recording projec for the occasiont. There’s a nice writeup of this shindig over on the guardian’s music blog http://www.sfbg.com/blogs/music/2008/10/ivy_makes_us_itch_for_more.html where you can learn that a) The Li Po is a pit but everybody loves it anyway b) Will’s backing band was basically members of Girls and the The Passionistas c) this show was fun and d) somebody is either backed by bank or spends a little too much time in an upscale grocery store because they think of presets in terms of overused adjectives for white wine. Just sayin.

SRSLY, not even sure why I’m writing about this. Pressed in severely small runs, either because nobody is buying records anymore or… well, you’ve heard the phrase “buy now ebay later”? In any event this is probably sold out by now. Don’t worry, a friend predicts they’ll pull an AFrames for the full length and how limited could that be?
First thing we gotta talk about is this artwork. Unicorns. RLY? Its so bad, its been done to death, but its still good. How can it be? I think this music might best be written about in the retarded caveman speak this dude sings in but I can’t figure it out. Two more severe punk rock songs. These guys will trample over you and might pretty well be unstoppable. For my buck the most bang comes from the short intro on the A side where these guys mix it up and do something a little more rhythmic, like a stone age krautrock or something.

The No Gos (celebrity Go Gos cover band)

Mayyors were great live, you can read about that here. By “celebrity” I mean members of T.I.T.S. and Erase Errata. I saw The No Gos a few weeks ago at Gilman, they were alright but I’m not a big Go Go’s fan. Straight up Go Gos covers. I guess the Go Go’s are “in” right now? The kids at Gilman loved it, which seemed wrong to me. Those little punks shoulda been beating up the new wavers, right? Guess I’m wrong if they’re playin with Mayyors. Times they are a changin!
Oh, and Matt Mantle. I don’t know anything about his DJing but he’s the bassist The Mantles these days; I saw them a while ago with Brilliant Colors and I think maybe this guy carries some No-Doze in his pockets or something because that band was really peppy that night. Hopefully he spins records like that too.

This dude — he knows how to have a good time and he knows how to include you, on stage and off. On stage he will deliver his pop/rock gems; he will give it his all until he falls off of the stage onto you (I’ve seen it).You should go over to his myspace page right now and check out the music. The song “Leader of the Band” works some kind of Elton John groove that you will not be able to shake, I swear it. I’ve been trying to shake it for a month now and I’ve still got it.
Seen at a party he will impart wisdom on the subject of world music and how awesome it was for Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and how there would be no Animal Collective without its influence on them while his friends laugh hysterically and you try to work it out. He will stand in the front at a show and scream and beg for one more song until there are beer soaked girls wrestling on the floor because they are so desperate to hear this song he is screaming for.
You will have fun. I’m not familliar with the other bands, but here’s what the Smile email had to say:

I went and saw the Aerosols a while back and then didn’t write about it because I couldn’t think of anything to say other than I really liked it. I still can’t but thats stupid, I should just write this: I really liked their brand of psychedelic pop music. You should go see them tomorrow, maybe they’ll do that cover of Lucifer Sam again that got all the kids at SMiLE that night dancing.
