contest with prizes: Guess the AIDS victim
-This from the great local film maker Gary Fembot, director of the sweet, funny, sexy “Mondo Bottomless”. A benefit for his upcoming film, “AIDS Camp - or Survival in the 21st Century”. Director Fembot has proved to be an unique voice in Gay cinema possessing the uncanny ability to inject the joy of being alive with a visual eye rooted in the nostalgic, a sort of homosexual Roger Corman. Come support Gary in his determination to take on his toughest film subject yet. From what I know most of this film has been shot and is in the editing stages, stayed tuned for updates!

October 30th, 2008 by elton tomAdmit it Mary! You’re fascinated by Glade.
October 25th, 2008 by elton tomOk, what’s up with this bitch in the Glade commercials? She’s a pathological liar I can totally relate. Poor girl can only afford Glade candles and she feels in order for people to like her she’s got to pretend they’re fancy French candles.
And it doesn’t stop there. In fact you can go all the way back before I was born to see that Glade is better than any French candle could ever be. This commercial from 1962 features the immortal line that’s the title of this post. See you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not. You’re perfect just the way you are.

August 6th, 2008 by elton tomWorld Famous Top 20 Movers & Shakers in SF
July 3rd, 2008 by elton tomWhen it comes to San Francisco, we don’t know how lucky we are to have so many good bands. Here’s our attempt to list the top 20 movers & shakers in the SF Bay Area music scene! Hey we’re modest so we’ll put ourselves in at #20 although I must point out that this is just a list, and the numeric order denotes NOTHING!
#20. World Famous In San Francisco - In a little over a year WFNSF has launched a blog, label and hopefully made a lot of you laugh! Recently hooking up with Revolver for distribution and currently poised to release Mon Cousin Belge’s debut record Quelle Horreur, the upcoming year will be an interesting one with singles by Passionistas, Bridez, Hard Place & more!
#19. Don Baird - Don spins (SF Eagle) all the latest and greatest records around town and also has one of the best & longest running columns (Jessica Dubroff anybody???) in SF. No blog bullshit for Don, he’s legit in print. check it out:
Beat This
#18. West Add Radio - the best radio station? It sometimes is! Help them get a new transmitter. WAR 93.7fm is a volunteer run community radio station broadcasting on the FM dial 24/7 out of San Francisco. WAR 93.7fm receives no money for advertisements. check out the events section for monthly benefit gigs….
#17. TransAm - The Club! Bringing the best rock bands together with the gay scene. And Don’t The Kids Just Love it!
#16. SMiLe - Neil Martinson has been incredibly supportive of the SF music scene. We LOVE Neil! His legendary club Smile has been in action since 2001 and we hope it never stops. Many bands have been lucky enough to book their debut at the Monday night Smile while the Friday night Smile showcases some of the most exciting rock from the Bay Area & beyond. And hey, there’s no link! Neil doesn’t use the internet! We love him for that, and he sometimes wears a cape!
#15. Antenna Farm - the past year has been amazing for this DIY indie label. Hugely successful releases from Sugar & Gold, The Botticellis and the re-release of Bart Davenports OOP debut have proved that this label is going strong, how do they do it? Running a label is soooo expensive…
#14. The OhSees - John Dwyer. (aka The Oh Sees, Thee Oh Sees and formerly OCS, Orange County Sound, Orinoka Crash Suite) began as a way for John Dwyer (of Coachwhips, Pink and Brown, Landed, Yikes, Burmese, The Hospitals, etc.) to release his instrumental, experimental home recordings. However, over the course of 7 albums it has evolved into a full band that is not surprisingly one of his best! We really like this band, John Dwyer rocks.
#13. The Bay Bridged - getting your band or show listed on this Bay Area blog guarantees exposure. Once bands clamoured to get listed in the SF Bay Guardian or SF Weekly, now it’s all about The Bay Bridged. Now they sometimes even link to World Famous In San Francisco. How cool is that!
#12 Revolver - Midheaven Mailorder. Most folks don’t realize how lucky we are to have a fantastic local independent music distributor! Check out their podcasts.
#11 Girls - On the SF scene for just about one year (and risen out of the ashes of the excellent Curls) Girls is the “IT” band of 2008, and with good reason. Their myspace page garnered rave reviews in Pitchfork. They’re about to embark on a tour (sure to wow crowds in NY and Paris! Chris and JR, currently rehearsing with their band. Girls debut 7″ is out soon on True Panther Sounds. Chris & JR know what they want when it comes to THAT sound!
#10 SF Eagle - Thursday Nite Live
Having hosted such bands as Times New Viking, the OhSees, and the Avengers, this legendary leather bar is the place to be on Thursday nights. Doug Hilsinger is the man mainly responsible, but the entire crew over there rules. DJ Andy we love you too!
#9 Randy Walker - Carletta Sue Kay and Mon Cousin Belge, we never seem to see Randy Walker walking about whenever there is a CSK or MCB show. WTF? For years Randy was known as the best singer in town, now he’s being recognized for his songs and lyrics. Combined with constant touring via Carletta and the resurrection of the Belge, make room for another mysterious Mr. Walker.
#8 Cole Palme - Founding member of the legendary Factrix. Still one of the most loved and respected musicians in this town with fans clamoring to gain access to recordings of his . Last time we talked to Cole he was working on something new, we keep our fingers crossed it comes out soon!
#7 Passionistas -video flyers, charisma up the ass, great songs, and a new single recorded by JR from Girls, out soon on World Famous In San Francisco. For a brief time last year, it almost seemed like God’s Boat might sink. Andrew was thinking of quitting, no drummer, and then manager Will (New & Used) was at a crossroads. Thank goodness Andrew gave it the good ol’ college try and is now contributing songs. Oh yeah, they found the perfect drummer. Tina rocks.
#6 Bridez - Currently on tour with Gravy Train, one of the best things to hit the scene this year, or any year for that matter! A fantastic new record out on Gifted Children Records this band also brings it live. Wildly exciting! A dirty good time.
This is taking too long! I give up…
here’s the Top 5, you figure out why they are the TOP 5….if you’re still reading this you just might need your head examined.
#5 Sam Flax Keener - Sam’s band played with the Foxx at the Hemlock last year and people are still gushing about it. This is the most mysterious band in the world. Even Sam’s friends think it is a mystery. Come out and play SAM!!
#4 The Vortex Room
#3 Tubesteak DJ Bus Station John
#2 Mission Creek Music Festival
#1 Tie!!!!! Apache (the band) and Davey! Davey goes to a lot of good shows. We saw him!

Helpful Hints
June 5th, 2008 by elton tomHi, I’m debuting a new column here at WFNSF! Helpful Hints. Since San Francisco lies in an earthquake prone area, here’s a quick reference of how to survive a catastrophic event.
Remember that stuff about hiding under a table or standing in a doorway?
Here’s an expert opinion that is a complete reversal of what we
were all taught.
EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP’S ARTICLE ON THE: ‘TRIANGLE OF LIFE’
My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the
American Rescue Team International (ARTI), www.amerrescue.org
most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save
lives in an earthquake.
The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City
during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child
was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by
lying down next to their desks in the aisles. I wondered why the children
were not in the aisles..
Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings
falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving
a space or void next to them. This space is what I call the ‘triangle of
life.’
The larger the object, the stronger the triangle is and the less it will
compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the
probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be
injured.
TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
1) Most everyone who simply ‘ducks and covers’ when buildings collapse are
crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are
crushed.
2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position.
You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct.
You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to a large bulky object (like
a sofa or desk) that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.
3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during
an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake.
Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick
buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries
but will cause fewer squashed bodies than concrete slabs.
4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply
roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. .
5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out
the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to
a sofa or large chair.
6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is
killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or
backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls
sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be
killed!
7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different ‘moment of
frequency’ (they swing separately from the main part of the building).
The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each
other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get
on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly
mutilated. Even if the building doesn’t collapse, stay away from the
stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. They may
collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be
checked for safety even when the rest of the building is not damaged.
Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible. It
is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than
the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the
building the greater the probability that your escape route will be
blocked.
9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls
in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles. This is exactly what happened
with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the
San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all
killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying
next to their vehicles. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to
them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.
10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices
and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large
voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.
The Big (Fat) Chill
May 26th, 2008 by elton tomOne of the more unusual moments in my life captured on film. If you can make it until the end, there’s a crowd shot which confirms this Mon Cousin Belge show took place at Lazy Bear. Hear what Tweaker Bitch really sounds like at http://www.myspace.com/moncousinbelge
Here’s another unusual moment with MCB, appearing in the promo video for The Gay Porn Film “The Velvet Mafia
