a muxtape for you

April 2nd, 2008 by Jeremy Smears

Today we are (kinda) hip to the internet trends. A muxtape for you with some bands we’ve talked about over the past year. Except for the Hard Place and Mon Cousin Belge songs, both of which come from albums out on our label World Famous in San Francisco, these songs were all totally available for free on the WWW so don’t get mad at me for stealing, ok?

worldfamousinsf.muxtape.com

  1. Girls - Lust For Life
  2. The Passionistas - Don’t Hit Snooze (Live)
  3. Hard Place - Mondays Are For Working
  4. Mon Cousin Belge - Tweaker Bitch
  5. Factrix - Splice Of Life
  6. Bridez - Steal Drums
  7. Sic Alps - Semi Streets
  8. Fuckwolf - Mardi Gras
  9. Jealousy - I Would Do That For Him
  10. The Passionistas - Little Dark Room (Live)
  11. Nothing People - Falling
  12. Connie Fucking Francis - Where The Boys Are (Live)

CyberSpace

November 26th, 2007 by myles

I spent my holiday weekend catching up with childhood friends in my hometown. My friend Jess (pictured on the moon) only wanted to talk about Facebook and how “it’s the future dude.” When Jess isn’t selling condos or jumping on his three backyard trampolines, he’s on Facebook tracking and stalking Santa Cruz college freshmen girls.

Our friend Marcus (holding the earth) is a geographer but surprisingly has adequate offline social skills, so he’s hardly on MySpace. Jess had a hard time convincing Marcus and I (floating in space) that we should set up Facebook accounts. We lost our trust in Jess years ago when he was phishing porn sites and basically stealing anything and everything he could off the Internet. But guess what? This didn’t sound so sleazy.

So we set up Facebook accounts. And yes, for friend-to-friend social networking, Facebook does seem better than MySpace. But Facebook hasn’t figured out music, and doesn’t seem to be friendly to musicians or artists. It’s impossible set up a page for your music. It’s also impossible to decorate your Facebook page or make anything look aesthetically interesting. You’d never see an Internet celebrity like Chris Crocker develop on Facebook. Everything is set to private and nothing is entirely public. My first impression of Facebook is that it favors the dull and uninterested.

Facebook feels a lot more mature than MySpace. If you poke around on it you’ll discover it is polluted with coworkers, classmates and family members. My REI infused Tanzanian sister is on Facebook; and my “HUMANIST~ANIMIST” walking stick sporting santabear of a dad (below) is even on Facebook. Are you on Facebook?

XXX-Mas Kitten Controversy Solved!!!!

September 29th, 2007 by elton tom

Last Holiday Season Ashley Huizenga, Freddy Christy and the rest of the Hard Place gang decided to make a video Christmas Card as a thank you to friends and fans. Once posted on YouTube, the clip somehow generated over 55,000 hits.

For a harmless little video, most of the comments were extremely negative and surprisingly hostile! Here’s a sample of the most amusing;

…….Americans see this and think “Europeans are stupid”
Europeans see US presidential elections/iraq war/reports on obesity and gun crime and think “Americans are stupid”……

……Yeah, because the US is the first country to attack another with little/no provocation…oh wait, wasn’t that England? or Germany? or France? or Spain? or Portugal? So many colonies and conquests..I can’t keep track anymore!……

…..Fuck americans and their shitty music…..

…..A cross between A Clockwork Orange, The Arcade Fire (if they sucked) and a massive, massive acid trip…..

…..Just…Wow. Thankyou b3ta. Definitely American, you can’t hide the knucklehead accent (much as they’re trying). As for you pwnednoob, European conquesting stopped about a hundred years ago, whereas the “Land of the Free” that remains prejudiced against African Americans and shot peaceful protesters in the 60’s seems to be getting a taste for imperialism……

O.K. Enough with the negative comments. Can you believe that shit? However, other people liked it and were amused by XXX-MAS Kitten. I found this on You Tube today so for all you haters, here’s proof that XXX-Mas Kitten spreads joy around the world:

For those of you who haven’t seen the original, you can do so here.
