Fun show alert! Our friend Ben books pretty unpredictable shows (sonically that is, the fun is predictable) at the argus. Sometimes you get improv, sometimes you get songs; sometimes you get noise, sometimes you get soothing sounds. This Friday, you get all of the above. Universe and Cloudcraft bring the gentle, Al Qaeda aren’t just being cheeky with their name and Sleepy Beach…
Whoa! I forgot this band existed and now I see there’s new songs up on their myspace page. Sleepy Beach make that cool kid sound (ala oh sees, fresh & onlys, et al) but damn its catchy. It kind of makes me think of the fucked up underbelly of california’s golden era, like thinking about Charles Manson in a present day Obama hope sort of way. Plus, its got some of our friends from over at Roman Meal in it. Don’t miss it!
I am gaying it up, mission style. You should come too!

SRSLY, not even sure why I’m writing about this. Pressed in severely small runs, either because nobody is buying records anymore or… well, you’ve heard the phrase “buy now ebay later”? In any event this is probably sold out by now. Don’t worry, a friend predicts they’ll pull an AFrames for the full length and how limited could that be?
First thing we gotta talk about is this artwork. Unicorns. RLY? Its so bad, its been done to death, but its still good. How can it be? I think this music might best be written about in the retarded caveman speak this dude sings in but I can’t figure it out. Two more severe punk rock songs. These guys will trample over you and might pretty well be unstoppable. For my buck the most bang comes from the short intro on the A side where these guys mix it up and do something a little more rhythmic, like a stone age krautrock or something.
Also, they have a show tonight at The Knockout:
10/01/08 @ The Knockout
Mayyors
The No Gos (celebrity Go Gos cover band)
DJs Matt Mantle & Dirty Doyle
Mayyors were great live, you can read about that here. By “celebrity” I mean members of T.I.T.S. and Erase Errata. I saw The No Gos a few weeks ago at Gilman, they were alright but I’m not a big Go Go’s fan. Straight up Go Gos covers. I guess the Go Go’s are “in” right now? The kids at Gilman loved it, which seemed wrong to me. Those little punks shoulda been beating up the new wavers, right? Guess I’m wrong if they’re playin with Mayyors. Times they are a changin!
Oh, and Matt Mantle. I don’t know anything about his DJing but he’s the bassist The Mantles these days; I saw them a while ago with Brilliant Colors and I think maybe this guy carries some No-Doze in his pockets or something because that band was really peppy that night. Hopefully he spins records like that too.
Which will you choose? Which show is right for you? Are you more east bay or san francisco, gay or… not so gay. There are implicit lifestyle implications in your choice!!! ZOMG don’t get weighed down and stay at home. Be a super fan and go to both, its all on the line!!!!!!!
Tuesdays haven’t been as fun since Aunt Charlies finally cured itself of The Clap. At least, that’s what I thought, but it turns out Tuesdays were taken over by something called THINGNIGHT which I have my suspicions about (suspicions that it will be super fun):
THINGNIGHT
9/30/08
@ Aunt Charlies Lounge, 133 TURK
with Jealousy and DJ LIESA
This week Jealousy is playing and Liza from BRIDEZ is djing and there’s absolutely no reason to be old and not go to a Midnight show on a Tuesday. I am obsessed with this song by Jealousy called “I Would Do That For Him”. Check out this video for it done by the guys who did the BRIDEZ video for Heart and the Girls video for Morning Light
I said I was back and then I don’t post for two weeks. I’ve been too busy wasting time setting up a facebook profile. I hate facebook. I tried to wait it out, but I lost. Why isn’t that totally over yet? Anyway, the next three nights I will not be lurking about the internet and I will be at all of these events even when it isn’t possible:
Thursday 9/11/2008
You know we love Doug and Thursdays at the eagle (I think, since that last post he finally got Carol’s load out of his hair). We love The Ohsees. We love the Sic Alps (and they have to have a better night tonight). And Ty Segall has been consistently entertaining every time I’ve seen him. This has good time written all over it.
Friday 9/12/2008
@ The Hemlock Tavern
As you know, I love girls (shut it). I wouldn’t miss this one either! Also, did you see, our very own Legs has piece about the boys in this weeks guardian.
@ Ghost Town Gallery
Sir Lord Von Raven went way up in my book when I heard they threatened to give the sound guy at the rickshaw stop a gorilla mask. Not because I have anything against the rickshaw stop, but because I had never heard the term gorilla mask before.
@The Knockout
This is the after party. Oldies courtesy of Primo and co! Its Nasty!
Saturday 9/13/2008
@ Gilman St
This show will be worth going to Gilman St and feeling like you’re a million years old because BRIDEZ keeps getting better, The Floating Corpses keep getting freakier, and Hunx and Junx can party.
Tonight, three bands with records released by our friends over at SHDWPLY swoop into town to blow your mind, or at least hold your head under water until you see stars.
I’ve been kind of obsessively listening to the Gary War myspace recently. Gurgling late-night bedroom pop. Its kind of quiet, like trying not to wake the folks, and sounds like its being broadcast from the rings of Saturn — you know, where you’d rather be instead of home (trying not to wake the folks). I thought the Legendary Pink Dots were on ok reference point but the people I’ve talked to about it have been all ‘Ariel Ariel Ariel’! Now that I have the LP (a split release between SDWPLY and Disaro) I can hear a little of that, but maybe its just that he (Ariel) mastered it.
I’m told The Super Vacations is Gary War’s rock band. I’ve only briefly listened to the myspace but sounds accurate. 60’s Hash Rock or something. I don’t know!
Finally, Teeth Mountain… after drinking this tea or smoking that bush a teeth mountain is probably what this group were seeing after they droned on whatever instruments they could find and grooved on that drum circle for twenty hours straight communing with whatever higher being they’re into (please please please don’t let it be as banal as ‘the universe’).
